5-Day Deep Rainforest Orangutan Trekking in Bukit Lawang

Our 5-day orangutan trekking expedition is built for travelers who want to spend real time deep inside the Sumatran rainforest, not just pass through it.

Over 5 days and 4 nights, explore Gunung Leuser National Park with an experienced local guide, search for wild orangutans and other rainforest wildlife, and sleep at jungle camps set farther from the village than our shorter treks reach.

This is our longest standard trekking route: a full extra day and night beyond the 4-day trek, at a pace that still suits most travelers with reasonable fitness.

Why Choose the 5-Day Expedition?

The 5-day trek suits travelers who don’t want to rush the rainforest and are willing to trade one extra day for meaningfully more time inside the park.

You have more time to:

  • Explore jungle trails further from the village
  • Search for wildlife across a wider stretch of the park
  • Spend four full nights in the rainforest instead of two or three
  • Enjoy quiet mornings and evenings at camp
  • Learn about rainforest ecology from your local guide
  • Experience authentic jungle camping across multiple sites
  • Disconnect from phone signal and the outside world
  • Move through Gunung Leuser at a slower, less rushed pace

5 Day Orangutan Trekking Full Itinerary

DAY 1 — ENTER GUNUNG LEUSER

Meet your guide in Bukit Lawang and begin the trek.

Enter Gunung Leuser National Park and walk into the rainforest, searching for wild orangutans and other wildlife along the way.

Jungle lunch, afternoon trekking, riverside camp, dinner, overnight in the jungle.

DAY 2 — INTO QUIETER TRAILS

Wake to the sounds of the rainforest and continue further from the village after breakfast.

This day covers trails that shorter treks don’t reach, with more time spent tracking wildlife rather than moving between points.

Jungle lunch, afternoon trekking, camp, dinner.

DAY 3 — DEEP RAINFOREST TRACKING

A full day spent in one of the more remote sections of the park.

Your guide focuses on tracking signs of orangutans, gibbons, monkeys, and tropical birds rather than covering distance.

Jungle lunch, continued tracking, camp, dinner.

DAY 4 — FINAL FULL DAY IN THE JUNGLE

Your last full day before heading back toward the river.

Spend the day on wildlife observation and photography, at a slower pace than earlier days as you head to the final campsite.

Jungle lunch, afternoon trekking, riverside camp, dinner, final night in the jungle.

DAY 5 — FINAL TREK & BOHOROK RIVER

Enjoy a final morning in the jungle before the trek back toward the river.

Lunch, then finish the expedition with traditional river tubing down the Bohorok River back to Bukit Lawang, arriving in the afternoon.
